Water Conservation Tips

Conserve, Recycle and Reduce your total water consumption by as much as 95%, with the methods provided below:

DON'T LEAVE WATER RUNNING
When washing your hands or brushing your teeth, don't leave the water running, and be sure to replace leaking faucets and valves.

USE LOW-FLOW SHOWER HEADS
Using low-flow shower heads can save up to 20% of a family's total water consumption, using only half the water of regular flow shower heads.

WASH DISHES BY HAND
When washing dishes, do them by hand; use one side for washing and the other for rinsing. This can save up to 75% of water used by dishwashers (up to 20% of total water consumption).

REPLACE YOUR CURRENT TOILET WITH A COMPOST TOILET
A composting toilet can reduce your total water use by at least 25%. Using a compost toilet not only eliminates water used by regular toilets, but will also eliminate the cost and the necessity for homeowners to get DEQ approval for septic and sewage systems, eliminating the monthly city sewage fee in the process.

VAPOR STEAM CLEAN YOUR LAUNDRY
Using only one tenth the amount of water, and consuming only half the electricity of a washing machine, vapor steam cleaners kill germs, bacteria, molds, mildew, fungus, bed bugs (dust mites) and can be used on a variety of different surfaces including countertops, clothes, curtains, floors, carpets, rugs, barbecue grills, ovens, and more. Add a few drops of your favorite herbal extract if you want, so as to transfer the scent and/or medicinal properties (for example, sage as an antiperspirant; or lemongrass to repell insects, etc.) to your clothes.

RECYCLE PLANT WATER
Almost all plants transpire (or sweat) at least 90% of all the water they use. When it gets warm enough, plants transpire just as a person sweats. For example, Just 1 Tree at 1 ft. in diameter can transpire up to 100 gallons of water per day, when certain climatic conditions are met (i.e., it is warm enough and not too humid). One way to catch these waters before they escape into the air, is to grow your plants in a green house where they will stay warm and can be grown all year round. Incorporate the use of hydrogels to absorb and slowly release this water to recycle transpired water for your plants to use again and again. The water has already been naturally purified via transpiration by your plants, and by removing the humidity from the green house, the plants inside it are further encouraged to transpire more water... and the cycle continues. Plants will still have to be watered, but recycling plant water can reduce your plants' water consumption by as much as 90-99%!

RECYCLE YOUR OWN WATER
Use a grey water system to recycle water; between the conservation and recycling of plant water, a grey water system and if necessary, a rainwater collection system (with rain chains from roof to rain barrels, basins or a water cistern) for saving water ... your yard, orchard, gardens and/or other plants need not be watered by any other source!
